Date Islam started: 610 A.D. (Source: #1)
Founder/Prophet/Leader: Muhammad (Leader) (Source: #1)
While it would only make sense to add a picture of him for this project, depicting Muhammad in any way is essentially forbidden for most muslims. (Source: #11)

Where Islam started: Arabia, around the city Mecca (Source: #2)
See Fig 2.
Basic beliefs/Rules/Practices: Islam can be a very strict religion. The world itself means "surrender," as in surrending to Allah (God)'s will. A practice amongst many muslims is to pray 5 times every day, facing Mecca (the holy city). It is also believed one must make a pilgrimage to Mecca once in their lifetime. Other important aspects of Islam aside from the pilgrimage and daily prayer are charity and fasting. (Source: #3)
Symbols: The Star and Cresent symbol and "Allah" (God) in Arabic commonly represent Islam as a whole (Source: #4)

Excerpt:
"This is a perfect Book; there is no doubt in it; it is a guidance for the righteous, Who believe in the unseen and observe Prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them; And who believe in that which has been revealed to thee, and that which was revealed before thee, and they have firm faith in what is yet to come." Holy Days: Two holy days in Islam are Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting known as Ramadan. Eid al-Adha marks the end of the hajj, or the pilgrimage to Mecca every muslim must make in their lifetime. (Source: #2)
Afterlife: Islam teaches that there is life after death, and this is known as Akhirah. In Islam, it is Allah who decides when a person dies and most Muslims believe that when they die, they will stay in their graves until Yawm al-din, the Day of Judgement. (Source: #6)
Gender Roles: In Islam, women and men are equal in front of our Creator as evident in different passages in the Quran (Source: #7)
Current isssues/crisis/trends: - There is ongoing violence between Israel (Judaism) and Palestine (Islam). It is seemingly endless, as it has gone on for over half a century. Both sides cannot come to an agreement on how to split up the land, since it is very holy to both their religions.
(Source: #8) - Currently in China the government is committing what is deemed by independent sources to be genocide on the Uyghur people, who are mostly muslim (Islam is very ingrained in their culture by now). (Source: #9)
Where do those who practice live today: Islam is the dominant religion throughout the Middle East, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Sahel region of Africa, and Central Asia. Additionally, China, Russia, India, and the Balkans all have large Muslim populations. (Source: #10)
